Kids Play Safe was founded by Spencer Warren, a father to a daughter named Emily. When Emily was just two years old, she broke her arm in a preventable accident on the playground, which landed her in the hospital for a week due to the possibility of nerve damage to her hand, from the abnormal break. Thankfully, Emily never suffered permanent damage from the break, but it left her parents realizing the importance of preventable injuries and wanted to give back to CHEO. From there, Spencer has raised over $200,000 towards childhood preventable injuries through his events: Ottawa Children’s Gala, Charity fore CHEO Golf Tournament and the Family Fun Day BBQ. Each event focuses on awareness towards preventable injuries, as well as raising funds to further education families in the Ottawa and surrounding areas.
Our Vision
Kids Play Safe has a vision to eliminate childhood preventable injuries in our community. With the help of our community, we can make this happen! ALL preventable injuries are just that; PREVENTABLE!
Who We Are
Kids Play Safe is dedicated to helping make our community safer in way of educating and eliminating preventable injuries. Through our events, we help raise money towards programs like ‘Plan-It Safe’ of CHEO and other childhood preventable injury initiatives in our communities. Every 1 in 5 kids who visit CHEO is due to a preventable injury. As a community we tend to forget the simple safety tips like wearing a bicycle helmet, using safety gates, etc and we are here to help remind families of the importance to be safety minded.
Without our Volunteers we wouldn’t be able to make this possible. Our volunteers spend countless hours planning and executing our events and also educating our community with awareness on childhood preventable injuries. Our volunteers are passionate and dedicated into making our community safer!
What We Do
Plan-it Safe is the Child and Youth Injury Prevention Centre at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The Centre was established in July of 1997 to encourage a structured and systematic approach to the prevention of child & adolescent intentional and unintentional injury in and around Eastern Ontario.
Plan-it Safe's mission is to increase local capacity, strengthen public policy, ensure effective programming and advocate for the creation of safe environments to reduce the toll injuries take on children and youth in Eastern Ontario. The Centre works in collaboration with many of the community partners who deliver injury prevention programming. It’s core competencies are injury surveillance, research and program evaluation, consultation on program planning, implementation and evaluation, advocacy and professional and public education.
Current Priorities
- Local surveillance and effective dissemination of data
- Enhancing regional injury initiatives through facilitation of Eastern Region Injury Network (ERIN) and the provincially funded Early Years Injury Initiative
- Preventing home injuries
- Summer and winter sports and recreational injuries (e.g., playgrounds, drowning, cycling, skateboarding, tobogganing and snow-boarding)
- Traffic-related injuries (children and youth as drivers and passengers)
